Review the renewal before it takes effect

Check what continues, what resets and what is changing. A renewal payment and a coverage upgrade can have very different consequences.

Direct answer
Pet insurance renewal continues a policy into its next term according to the contract and applicable law. Check the notice, premium, benefit settings and payment method even if it renews automatically. Do not assume that a coverage upgrade, replacement policy or lapse preserves the same protection. Ask how known conditions, waiting periods and deductible balances are treated before making a change.

Compare Why it matters
Term dates and named pet Confirm continuous dates and the correct animal.
Legal insurer, form and endorsements Find any contract or issuer change behind a familiar brand name.
Premium and payment schedule Separate the full-term price from installments or payment fees.
Deductible, reimbursement and limits Look for both changed amounts and reset rules.
Options and exclusions Verify that wanted benefits remain selected and read any new notice.

Do this when the renewal material arrives, not only after a bank charge changes. If the paperwork is incomplete, ask for the full renewal offer and the deadline for questions or changes. An email saying the policy renews is not a summary of every difference.

Keep the version you actually received. A current website can describe a different product generation from the one you hold.

What to know

Automatic renewal still deserves an active check

It says existing waiting periods do not restart and gives a window through 14 days after renewal to request coverage increases, subject to underwriting approval and availability.

Confirm that the payment method works and your contact details are current. If the insurer asks for information, respond through the appropriate account channel and keep confirmation. Do not interpret silence or an attempted charge as proof that coverage is active.

If the policy is not being renewed, ask for the written reason, effective date and available review route. The appropriate state insurance department can help with an insurance question; the options depend on the contract and jurisdiction.

What to know

Know which balance resets and which history remains

An annual deductible and a lifetime per-condition deductible work differently at a term boundary. A satisfied annual amount is not the same as a permanently satisfied deductible for an eligible condition. Read your own design.

Imagine an invented annual-deductible policy with a $300 deductible already met in the old term. If an eligible $500 treatment falls in a new term, an 80% payment after a fresh $300 deductible would be $160, leaving $340. With the deductible already met within the same term, the same assumed formula would pay $400, leaving $100. These are separate illustrative situations, not a recommendation to move treatment dates.

Ask the insurer how treatment and invoice dates allocate a claim to a term. Follow the veterinarian’s advice on timing; never delay necessary care to improve insurance arithmetic. Also check the benefit-limit reset separately from the deductible reset.

Treat a requested upgrade as a separate decision

Confirm the consequences and effective date before requesting a coverage change.

Renewing unchanged coverage is not necessarily the same as increasing benefits. Embrace’s FAQ warns that upgrades may involve re-underwriting, new waiting periods and evaluation of prior conditions. These are provider-specific examples of why you need an answer before changing limits, deductibles or options.

Ask whether the change affects only the added portion or re-evaluates more of the policy, which conditions may be excluded, whether new waiting periods apply and when the change becomes effective. Get that answer in writing. Do not assume that a dropdown allowing you to request a change means it is approved.

If keeping the existing protection is more valuable than the proposed increase, you can evaluate renewal without that upgrade. The useful comparison is the actual old and proposed new terms, including the risk of losing continuity.

Cost & value

Ask why the price changed without assuming the answer

A larger renewal premium does not by itself prove that a recent claim caused the increase. Other products must be checked on their own terms. Ask for the explanation applicable to your offer.

If the new payment is difficult, compare permitted reductions against the costs you would retain. Removing an option can remove a benefit; raising a deductible can shift more of a future bill back to you. Ask whether restoring the benefit later would require another review.

Before switching companies, check how the replacement treats the pet’s accumulated history and any gap between policies. A lower renewal alternative is only comparable after that continuity question is resolved. Keep written confirmation of the effective policy and any cancellation you eventually choose; this guide does not request or carry out a change for you.
